In the 1980’s Matthew and Ruth Benge began breeding alpacas, llamas, yaks and rare domestic coloured sheep on their farm in Golden Bay, New Zealand. Their passion for rare breeds, the amazing range of natural colours on offer and appreciation of the different qualities and attributes of these fleeces led to the creation of The Rare Yarns Company.
The Rare Yarn Company embraces contemporary hand knitting wools by taking Black, grey and brown alpaca fibre and laying it alongside white merino which creates a heathered effect when dyed.
Update on Rare Yarns – sadly Rare Yarns have decided to stop producing this lovely yarn so supplies of these are limited to what we have in stock.
